Wheatgrass: What Is There We Can Tell You?

Author: Kerris Samson

It has now become widely acknowledged that wheatgrass is one of natures own super foods. Certainly when it is grown in organic soil you will find that wheatgrass retains 82 out of the 92 minerals that are in the soil and they say that 1oz of wheatgrass juice has the same amount on nutrients contained with in it that you would find in 2.5lbs of green vegetables. Hopefully the information provided below will go some way to explaining why so many people swear by wheatgrass.

Normally wheatgrass is grown from Red Wheatberry which is a special strain of this plant and contains very high concentrations of chlorophyll, amino acids, enzymes, minerals and vitamins which are vital to keeping your body healthy. The best way to obtain the maximum nutritional value from this plant is by extracting the juice. Certainly unjuiced wheatgrass is indigestible because the high levels of cellulose contained with in it and also because it is so fibrous. So by making the juice you are able to easily digest the high levels of nutrients contained within.

You will find that many health food shops now sell wheatgrass, but if you really want to know where yours has come from you could grow it at home. There are many wheatgrass growing kits available and it can be grown in doors, so you dont even need to own a garden, all you need is a window sill that receives plenty of sunlight each day. Another benefit of growing your own wheatgrass is that it is fresher, unlike when you buy it in a shop it will have been damaged during transportation from where it was grown and then it will have been sat of the shelves in the shop for extended periods of time. So by growing your own wheatgrass you will find that it has retained even more of its nutrient content when it reaches your juicer. When you are cutting your wheatgrass make sure that it is approximately 7 to 8 inches in length as than is when it has reached its nutritional peak.

Many people say that when first tasting wheatgrass juice they found it a little strange and many now prefer to make a drink using wheatgrass juice with other fruit or vegetables. Certainly in the beginning you may find because of the juices strong taste and high nutrient content that you can only drink around an ounce a day (either with or without other juices), but gradually you will find that you can increase your intake up to about 4oz of this juice a day. You will need about one handful of wheatgrass to make approximately 1oz of wheatgrass juice.

Another added benefit of wheatgrass is that it is gluten free (even though it contains the word wheat in its name) it is in fact a grass not a wheat plant and is certainly suitable for anyone who has a intolerance to gluten.
