Enhance Your Steam Bath With Aromatherapy

Author: Rick Young
At one time, steam baths were found only in upscale athletic clubs and in opulent homes. Now that steam-bath technology has become much more mainstream, however, many people have been able to discover and enjoy the many healthful benefits of steam.

In addition to its ability to relax sore muscles, steam helps promote natural perspiration that assists in removing impurities from the body. This improves overall circulation and boosts the immune system.

"Steam bathing has been considered one of the simplest ways to rid the body of toxins," said Dr. Deb Kern of Lake Austin Spa Resort in Austin, Texas. "As the pores in the skin open up, millions of sweat glands start to excrete as the body rids itself of metabolic and other waste products."

Now, new accessories for steam baths, such as the AromaSteam steamhead from MrSteam, enhance the experience by using aromatherapy oils. The steamhead comes equipped with a reservoir to provide an even flow and distribution of steam and aromatherapy oils.

To help calm the body and revive the senses, simply add a few drops of aromatherapy oil to the steamhead prior to starting the steam bath. Using mint during a steam bath, for example, provides a rejuvenating boost - perfect for an early morning energizer. Or, for a more relaxing experience

after a long day, oils such as lavender can be added to encourage a good night's sleep. Eucalyptus oils, on the other hand, assist with allergy and sinus problems.

"Steam bathing and, thus, steam inhalation, is an effective treatment in respiratory conditions and is highly recommended for the treatment of the common cold, sinusitis, bronchitis, allergies and asthma," Kern said.

MrSteam's essential oils, which are specially blended for the steam-bathing experience, are available in such fragrances as eucalyptus, lavender, evergreen and energizing mint.

MrSteam also manufactures compact, stainless-steel steam generators that can be installed in closets, vanities, basements or heated attics.
