Traveling To Vienna-How to Get There

Author: Eriani Doyel

If you are traveling to Vienna there are many ways to do it. A lot depends on where you are before you go to Vienna. When traveling to Vienna it is best to make some plans before you go so that you can make the best informed decisions. The best times for traveling to Vienna if you want to avoid the crowds are in May and early June and September and October. Once ski season and Christmas hit, it will be a much busier place.

The Schwechat Airport is the airport that those who are traveling to Vienna by plane will fly into. You may be able to get cheaper fares if you travel to other airports such as Salzburg, so check fares. Austrian Air serves this airport. Once you land you will have more decisions to make about traveling to Vienna. Do you want to travel the 12 miles from the airport by the speedy city double decker train, the less expensive S7 train, or by bus, shuttle, or taxi? The buses run every 20 to 30 minutes, but make sure that you get the right one. One takes you to the City Air Terminal and the other to the West and South train stations. Your bus pass will also transfer to local transportation once you get into the city center. A taxi is convenient and all of them have a set rate for traveling to Vienna from the airport. Just make sure that you know which of the 23 districts in the city you are headed to in case your taxi driver doesn't.

Most of the museums and other popular sights in Vienna are located in District One, which is the central district. You can walk to most of them, so you may not need to use public transportation. However, if you do use public transportation, you can purchase a pass at a subway station and use it to transfer to buses, or other transportation. The bus driver will charge you an extra fee.

You can also travel to Vienna by boat across the Danube or by car (it is 187 miles from Salzburg.)
