Live For Today, Not Tomorrow!

Author: M Hoov

How many times have you heard this? If you paid a nickel for every time you have heard this, you would probably be in bankruptcy court by now. I am referring to people who speak as if they will live forever. Well to quote the pastor of my church, "The results are in and experts have concluded that 10 out of every 10 people will eventually die." It's common knowledge that many of us think that we are invincible and will live forever. We like to think it's someone else that will pass prematurely.

Our journey begins as an infant crawling onto the road of life. Of course, we never know how many miles there are on the road. We have a journey to follow but don't know what path we will take or where it will lead us. The only thing that we know about our journey is that it will eventually come to an end. I personally believe that we are living on "borrowed time." To further elaborate, how many times have you heard someone refer to their retirement? They boldly state, When I retire in 20 years, I will do this or that How do they even know they will live long enough to retire? They get so wrapped up in their future plans that they forget to live today.

I dont think about retiring or what I will do in 10 years. I try to live my life today and do everything I can to enjoy my life. Now dont get me wrong, I am not saying to forego a retirement account or a college fund. Those are financial preparations for the future. If you are financially able to build a retirement account or a college fund, they will be available to your children or spouse in the future if you prematurely pass on. We are unable to prepare our life for the future since we dont know when it will actually end.

I am more concerned about what I will do in the next 20 minutes than what I may do 20 years from today. Take a look at your local newspaper and you will read about someone passing away in their early years. Most of us just shake our head and think that they were too young. We are never too young to leave this Earth. We hear people say live for the day but does anyone actually implement this into their life? I would like to share some personal thoughts on how to live for the day. These suggestions are for daily use.

Never be afraid to tell family or friends that you love them. Whether you call or use email, dont be afraid to let people know.

Give thanks to your boss or employer. You may not have the best job or the best boss, but at least you are employed and are being provided a means of financial support. Think about the people who would like to have your job and your salary.

Never go to bed angry at anyone. If someone chooses to be angry with you, its their issue, not yours.

Thank a co-worker. If they have helped you, remember to give thanks to them. If they were having a bad day, your kindness could mean a lot to them.

Give your dog or cat a hug or pet them before you go to bed. They need love too!

Parents with children at home: Stop in and check in on them while they sleep, even if they are pretending to be asleep!

Dont ever take anyone for granted. They (or you) may not be around later to take for granted!
